How long to tan in UV 8
UV 8 is the first step of the WHO very high band. It is the classic holiday-beach UV: a southern summer, a clear sky, the middle of the day.
At this level the numbers in the table above get short fast. Very Fair skin has a first session of just 3:20 and burns after ~17 minutes. Olive/Dark skin burns after ~36 minutes, with a first session of 7:10.
Even the darkest skin type crosses its burn line in well under an hour.
What “burns after” really means
The burn time is your MED: the UV dose that just turns unadapted skin pink. It is a threshold, not a target. You do not want to get near it, and certainly not every day.
Also, the table is an average for each skin type. People within one type vary more than the types differ from each other. If your skin reacts faster than the table says, trust your skin.
The UV 8 mistake: falling asleep
The most common way to burn at UV 8 is simple. You lie down after lunch, the sea air is cool, and you doze off. Twenty minutes later Fair skin has taken its full burn dose, and you feel nothing. Redness shows up only 12 to 24 hours later.
Three habits stop this:
- Use a timer with a sound or voice, not just your phone clock.
- Turn over on time. Front and back about a third of the time each, each side 15–20%.
- Rest in the shade at the end, then cover up.
Sand, water and shade
At the beach, UV also comes from below. Water and sand reflect part of it back onto your skin. Sitting under an umbrella cuts the direct sun, but it is not full protection. Count beach time after your session as extra sun.
Should you tan at UV 8 at all?
You can, if you keep it short and build up slowly. But you have a better option on many days: choose your hour. UV is highest around solar noon, roughly 11:00 to 15:00 in summer. Morning and late afternoon give you lower UV and longer, easier sessions. See UV 5 for how much calmer that feels.
Who should be careful
Very Fair and Fair skin have about 20 minutes or less before they burn here. Use sunscreen on your face, lips, ears and tattoos. If you have a photodermatosis, take photosensitising medication, have had skin cancer or have many moles, talk to a doctor first. Any UV exposure raises skin cancer and skin-ageing risk.
