UV 5 in one minute
UV 5 is the top of the WHO moderate band. It is one of the most searched tanning levels, and for good reason. It gives a real tanning effect while sessions stay long enough to plan.
The table above shows the gap between skin types clearly. Very Fair skin burns after ~27 minutes, Olive/Dark after ~57, about twice as long. Even so, the first session for Olive/Dark skin is only 11:28.
Where the numbers come from
Each skin type has a burn threshold called the MED, the UV dose that just turns skin pink. It is measured in J/m². The app uses 200 for Very Fair, 240 for Fair, 330 for Medium and 430 for Olive/Dark.
The UV index tells you how fast that dose arrives. UV 1 equals 25 mW/m² of burning UV, so UV 5 is five times that. Divide your MED by the strength and you get your burn time. The first session is 20% of it.
One honest warning: people of the same skin type differ more than the types differ from each other. The table is a starting point. Your skin’s reaction the next day matters more.
How long to tan in UV 5 over a whole week
Day one is just the first session. After that, in Suntan Workout:
- Each session adds about 18% to the dose.
- You rest about 23 hours after session 1, longer after later ones.
- By session 8 you reach 64% of your MED, still well under the burn line.
So you do not tan “for 30 minutes a day” at UV 5. You start short and earn the longer sessions.
Splitting the time
Use four positions plus shade:
- Front and back: about 30–35% of the sun time each.
- Left and right side: 15–20% each.
- Shade rest: a few minutes at the end.
For Medium skin, 8:48 of sun split this way means only a few minutes per side. A timer that tells you when to turn is much easier than watching the clock.
The mistake people make at UV 5
They trust the feel of the day. A breeze on the beach, a dip in the sea, and the skin feels cool. But UV has no temperature. You burn as fast at 18°C as at 38°C at the same UV index.
Water and sand also reflect UV back at you. A towel under an umbrella is not full protection.
Who should be careful
Very Fair skin burns in under half an hour at UV 5, so keep sessions short and honest. Everyone should use sunscreen on the face, lips, ears and tattoos. If you have a photodermatosis, take photosensitising medication, have had skin cancer or have many moles, talk to a doctor before tanning. No UV level is safe; a plan only lowers the chance of a burn.
