How long to tan at UV 4

UV 4 is one of the easiest levels for a beginner. The sun is strong enough to tan, and the times are long enough to manage without stress.

Check the table above for your skin type. Two numbers matter. The burn time is when unadapted skin starts to go pink. The first session is about 20% of it, and that is all you take on day one. For Very Fair skin that is 6:40. For Olive/Dark skin it is 14:20, a little over twice as long.

When you meet UV 4

UV 4 sits in the WHO moderate band (3–5). In mid-latitudes it is typical of late spring mornings, early autumn days and summer late afternoons. On a summer day you often find it in the morning or late afternoon.

That makes UV 4 a smart choice on hot days. Instead of tanning at noon, go earlier or later and you get a calmer, longer session.

A simple first-session plan at UV 4

Take Fair skin as an example. The first session is 8:00 of sun in total, not per side.

  • Lie on your front for about a third of it.
  • Turn onto your back for another third.
  • Give each side the rest, about 15–20% each.
  • Finish with a short shade rest.

Then stop. It feels short. That is normal. Sunburn takes 12 to 24 hours to show, so wait for tomorrow before you judge how it went.

The trap at UV 4: “it’s cloudy, so it’s fine”

Moderate days are often grey or breezy. Light cloud can still let most UV through, and broken cloud is the worst case: the sun comes back at full strength between clouds. Wind cools your skin but does not block UV. You burn as fast at 18°C as at 38°C at the same UV index.

The app plans patchy-cloud days as if the sun were fully out. It also checks the live UV every 3 minutes and trims the session if the UV rises.

After the session

If your skin is fine the next day, move to the next session. In Suntan Workout each step adds about 18% to the dose, and the rest after session 1 is about 23 hours. If you went pink, repeat the same session. If you went red, stay out of the sun until it heals; see a doctor for blisters, fever or a large area.

Who should be careful

UV 4 is moderate, not harmless. Every exposure adds to skin cancer and skin-ageing risk. Keep sunscreen on your face, lips, ears and tattoos. Talk to a doctor first if you have a photodermatosis, take photosensitising medication, have had skin cancer or have many moles.
