How long to tan at UV 3: the answer
UV 3 is where tanning starts. Below it, skin barely responds. At UV 3 it does, but slowly. That is why the times in the table above are the longest of any UV level.
The table above shows the widest spread of any UV level. Very Fair skin has a first session of 8:53, while Olive/Dark skin gets 19:07. Even the burn times are long: from ~44 minutes for Very Fair to ~96 minutes for Olive/Dark. Long, but not endless.
Your burn time is your MED: the UV dose that just turns your skin pink. Everything in the app is a share of it.
What UV 3 means
The WHO calls UV 3–5 moderate. UV 3 is the bottom of that band. You meet it on spring and autumn days in mid-latitudes, or in summer in the early morning and late afternoon.
It is a gentle place to start a tanning plan. Sessions are long enough that a short delay will not hurt you. It is also a good level for Very Fair skin, which burns fastest at every UV.
The main mistake at UV 3: staying for hours
UV 3 feels weak. The air may be cool and the sun soft. So people stay out all afternoon, thinking nothing can happen.
But look at the table above again. Very Fair skin still burns after about 44 minutes. A long lunch on a terrace is enough. And sunburn redness takes 12 to 24 hours to fully show, so you will not know until the next day.
UV does not feel hot. Cool air or a breeze hides it completely.
How to plan a session at UV 3
Split the sun time across positions so no side gets it all:
- Front: about a third of the time.
- Back: about a third.
- Each side: 15–20%.
- Shade rest at the end.
At UV 3 the dose is low, so later sessions can get long. The app warns you before you start a very long one rather than quietly cutting it short. If the UV drops below 3 during the day, it tells you there is no point carrying on.
Watch the UV rise
UV 3 in the morning can climb much higher by noon. Double the UV and you reach the same dose in half the time. The app checks the live UV every 3 minutes. If it climbs above your plan, the rest of the session is shortened so your dose stays the same.
Who should be careful
Very Fair and Fair skin should still treat UV 3 with respect. Use sunscreen on your face, lips, ears and tattoos. If you have a light-sensitive skin condition, take photosensitising medication, have had skin cancer or have many moles, talk to a doctor first. Any UV adds to skin cancer and ageing risk.
