Quick answer: UV 9 tanning time

At UV 9 a first session is measured in a few minutes, not in half-hours. In the table above, Very Fair skin gets 2:58 and Olive/Dark skin 6:22. Burn times run from ~15 minutes for Very Fair to ~32 for Olive/Dark.

Every skin type except Olive/Dark crosses its burn line in under 25 minutes.

Where you meet UV 9

UV 9 is in the WHO very high band (8–10). It is a southern summer noon, the tropics, or a sunny day in the mountains. If you have flown somewhere warm for a holiday, this is a very likely UV for the middle of the day.

Pick your hour

The best tool at UV 9 is your watch. UV peaks around solar noon, roughly 11:00 to 15:00 in summer. Earlier and later, it is lower.

So instead of fighting UV 9 with a three-minute session, you can:

  • Tan in the morning or late afternoon, when the UV is lower and the session is longer.
  • Spend the middle of the day in real shade, indoors or covered.
  • Use the strong hours for a swim with a T-shirt, not for lying on a towel.

Same tan, fewer chances to get it wrong.

If you do tan at UV 9

Keep it tight:

  1. Set the time before you lie down. For Fair skin the whole first session is 3:33.
  2. Split it. Front and back about a third each, each side 15–20%.
  3. Stop and rest in the shade.
  4. Wait a day. Redness takes 12 to 24 hours to show. The app rests you about 23 hours after session 1.

The next day, be honest. Fine: go to the next session. Pink: repeat the same one. Red: stay out of the sun until it heals.

Why the app checks every 3 minutes

At UV 9 a small change in the sky matters. A cloud can drop the reading, then the sun comes back at full strength. Suntan Workout reads the live UV every 3 minutes. If it rises above the plan, the rest of the session is cut so your dose stays the same. With patchy cloud, it plans as if the sun were fully out.

Who should be careful

Very Fair skin can burn in about a quarter of an hour here. Use sunscreen on your face, lips, ears and tattoos. If you have a photodermatosis, take photosensitising medication, have had skin cancer or have many moles, talk to a doctor before any tanning. If you get burned, get out of the sun and cool down; see a doctor for blisters, fever or a large area.
