How long to tan in UV 10: the numbers

UV 10 is the top of the WHO very high band, one step before extreme. Here even skin that “never burns” can.

In the table above, Very Fair skin gets a first session of 2:40 and burns after ~13 minutes. At the other end, Olive/Dark skin gets 5:44 and burns after ~29 minutes.

Note that last number. Olive/Dark skin burns in under half an hour at UV 10. Darker skin has a higher burn threshold, but not an unlimited one.

Where UV 10 happens

You meet UV 10 near the tropics, at high altitude, and at noon in a southern summer. Altitude matters: the higher you go, the stronger the UV. A cool mountain lake can have a fiercer sun than a hot city.

“I already have a tan” is not a plan

The most common thinking at UV 10 is: “I’m already brown, I’ll be fine.” A base tan protects only a little, about SPF 2–3. At UV 10, that buys you a few extra minutes, not an afternoon.

A tan built over a programme does help your skin cope. That is why Suntan Workout only moves you up after your skin handled the previous session without reddening. But the app never treats a tan as permission to stay out for hours.

How a UV 10 session looks

For Medium skin, a first session is 4:24 of sun in total. Split it like this:

  • Front: about a third
  • Back: about a third
  • Each side: 15–20%
  • Then a shade rest

That is only a minute or two per position. Trying to time this by eye on a beach is hard. A voice coach that says “turn onto your back” at the right second is the easy way.

Better hours

UV is highest around solar noon, about 11:00 to 15:00 in summer. At UV 10 it is often worth moving your session to the morning or late afternoon. The UV will be lower and the session longer and calmer. Spend noon in the shade, and remember that sand and water reflect UV even there.

Who should be careful

Everyone, at this level. Very Fair skin burns in about 13 minutes. Use sunscreen on your face, lips, ears and tattoos. If you have a photodermatosis, take photosensitising medication, have had skin cancer or have many moles, talk to a doctor first. No tan is worth a burn, and no UV exposure is risk-free.
