Updated:
| Skin type | Starts to burn after | First session (20% of MED) |
|---|---|---|
| Very Fair (I) | ~12 min | 2:25 |
| Fair (II) | ~15 min | 2:55 |
| Medium (III–IV) | ~20 min | 4:00 |
| Olive/Dark (V–VI) | ~26 min | 5:13 |
UV 11 is extreme
The WHO calls UV 11 and above extreme. It is the strongest sun most people will ever stand in. At UV 11 a session is about half as long as the same session at UV 6.
In the table above, the burn times run from ~12 minutes for Very Fair skin to ~26 minutes for Olive/Dark. First sessions go from 2:25 to 5:13. That is the least room of any UV level.
If the UV goes higher than 11, these times get shorter still.
Where you find UV 11
Think tropics, high mountains and noon in a southern summer. Holidays near the equator often bring UV 11 around midday. Snow at altitude adds more, because snow reflects UV strongly.
Our honest advice: change the hour
At UV 11 the smartest move is often not to tan at noon at all. UV is highest around solar noon and lower in the morning and late afternoon. Going earlier or later gives you:
- a lower UV and longer sessions,
- more room for error if you are a minute late to turn,
- the same tanning dose, because dose is strength × time.
Use the noon hours for shade, a shirt and a hat.
If you tan at UV 11
Keep first sessions very short and very structured:
- Decide the total before you start. For Very Fair skin it is 2:25.
- Split it across front, back and both sides. Front and back get about a third each, each side 15–20%.
- Rest in the shade, then cover up.
- Wait at least a day. Redness can take 12 to 24 hours to show.
Do not “top up” later the same day. An hour of lounging in the sun at this level is more than twice the burn dose for every skin type.
Why a timer is not optional here
Two or three minutes per session leaves no slack. Suntan Workout reads the live UV where you are and rechecks it every 3 minutes. If the UV climbs, it cuts the rest of the session so the dose stays the same. It tells you by voice when to turn, so you do not have to watch your phone.
Who should be careful
At UV 11 every skin type burns in under half an hour. Very Fair and Fair skin should think twice about tanning in these hours at all. Use sunscreen on your face, lips, ears and tattoos. If you have a photodermatosis, take photosensitising medication, have had skin cancer or have many moles, talk to a doctor first. If you burn, get out of the sun and cool down; see a doctor for blisters, fever or a large area.
